Tup Semen Freezing & Storage

Freezing semen is a cost-effective insurance against premature death or injury.

It allows long term preservation of quality or rare breed genetics. Shared ownership rams can be used by multiple people without the need to be transported. Semen sales can provide an additional source of income. Frozen semen can also be available as back up on your Artificial Insemination (AI) day.

We do all this at our Barnard Castle site.

Tups are tested for Maedi Visna (MV) and Border Disease to prevent these diseases being passed on via the semen.

Rams are trained to jump an in-season teaser ewe and semen collected using an artificial vagina.

If this is not possible then an electro-ejaculator can be used.

Semen quality is then assessed, if it is of sufficient quality, the semen is extended, chilled and frozen in pellets containing two standard AI doses.

A dose is then thawed and if greater than 30% of sperm are progressively motile the semen is retained in liquid nitrogen. One jump can yield up to 50 doses.

We can store your semen in our liquid nitrogen tanks and can arrange transport of frozen semen around the UK.
